Recipe for making homemade chai
Chai is a delicious and warming spiced tea that originates from India. It is typically made with milk and a mixture of spices including cloves, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper. This recipe is for a homemade chai concentrate that can be stored in the fridge and used to make a quick and easy cup of chai whenever you fancy.
Ingredients:
1L milk of your choice (dairy, almond, soy, coconut etc)
1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup black tea leaves
1 teaspoon cardamom seeds
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon ginger powder
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions:
1. Add all of the ingredients except for the tea leaves to a saucepan and stir over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture comes to a simmer.
2. Add the tea leaves and continue to simmer for 5 minutes.
3. Remove from the heat and allow to steep for 10 minutes.
4. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean container.
5. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
To make a cup of chai:
1. Take 1/4 cup of the concentrate and add it to a mug along with 1/2 cup of water.
2. Heat in the microwave or on the stove until hot and enjoy!
If you want to make your chai extra creamy, you can add a splash of cream or milk when you reheat it. You can also play around with the spices to suit your taste. If you prefer a less sweet chai, you can reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe
