Roy Rogers is a chain of American fast-food restaurants founded in 1968 in Chesapeake, Virginia. The company’s namesake was the famous cowboy actor and singer Roy Rogers.
The restaurant was founded by Rod Gray, who had been a friend of Roy Rogers since they were both children. Roy Rogers agreed to let Gray use his name and likeness for the restaurant in exchange for a percentage of the profits.
The first Roy Rogers restaurant opened on August 10, 1968, in Lexington, Virginia. The restaurant was an instant success, and by the end of 1968, there were already six more locations in Virginia and Maryland.
By the early 1970s, the chain had expanded to over 100 locations in the United States. The menu at Roy Rogers restaurants consisted of American comfort food such as hamburgers, french fries, and milkshakes.
In 1974, the chain introduced its famous “Roy Rogers” chicken nuggets. The nuggets were made with all white meat chicken that was breaded and fried. They were served with a dipping sauce on the side.
