What you need
3 cups heavy whipping cream 6 large egg yolks 1 cup sugar 1 cup buttermilk (cold) 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
How to make it
In an expensive saucepan raise the cream to a simmer, stirring frequently. In a medium bowl, sweep the yolks with the sugar. Take the egg mixture into about 1 cup of the custard until well blended; stir again into the hot mixture in the saucepan. Cook, stirring constantly over medium heat, until slightly thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Do not let the mixture boil. Remove from heat and stir in cold, well-shaken buttermilk and vanilla extract. Place the mixture in an ice bath or chill the mixture until very cold, about 2 hours. Freeze the ice cream freezer according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Transfer to containers and cover tightly. Freeze ice cream until firm. Makes about 1 quart of ice cream.
