Best substitute for cooking wine in Broccoli Beef Recipe
Last Updated on
If you love Chinese take-out, but want to save some money by cooking it at home, this easy broccoli beef recipe is for you! This dish is packed with flavor, but what really makes it special is the cooking wine. You could use any type of wine in this recipe, but white wine is best because it doesn’t add any color to the dish. If you don’t have any wine on hand, or if you’re looking for a non-alcoholic option, you can substitute chicken broth, beef broth, or even water. Just be sure to add a little extra seasoning to make up for the lack of flavor in the cooking liquid.
Ingredients:
1 pound beef chuck roast, trimmed and cut into 1-inch cubes
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 large onion, diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
3 tablespoons soy sauce
3 tablespoons dry sherry or white wine
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 heads broccoli, cut into florets
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup water
Instructions:
In a large skillet or wok, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook until browned on all sides. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
Add the onion, garlic, and ginger to the pan and cook until the onion is softened. Stir in the soy sauce, sherry or white wine, sugar, and black pepper. Add the beef back into the pan.
Add the broccoli and cook until tender-crisp. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water. Add this mixture to the pan and cook until the sauce has thickened.
